Dermal Filler Aftercare
Patient Information
Important Notice
This information is provided for general educational purposes only and is intended for patients who have already received dermal filler treatment following an individual consultation with a qualified health practitioner.
It is not intended to advertise or promote prescription medicines or to encourage treatment.
Purpose of Aftercare
Appropriate aftercare following dermal filler treatment supports patient comfort, assists with normal settling of the product, and reduces the risk of complications such as prolonged swelling, bruising, or filler displacement. Individual responses vary, and personalised advice provided by your treating practitioner should always be followed.
Immediately After Treatment (Same Day)
Remain upright for several hours following treatment
Avoid touching, rubbing, or applying pressure to treated areas
Avoid makeup application to injection sites for several hours unless advised otherwise
A clean, cold compress may be gently applied to reduce swelling if recommended by your practitioner
Mild swelling, redness, tenderness, or bruising at injection sites is common and usually temporary.
First 24–48 Hours
Avoid strenuous exercise or activities that significantly increase heart rate
Avoid alcohol consumption, as this may increase bruising
Avoid heat exposure, including saunas, steam rooms, hot baths, and excessive sun exposure
Avoid facial treatments, massage, or cosmetic procedures
Avoid exfoliating or active skincare products over treated areas
Swelling and bruising often peak within the first 24–48 hours and gradually improve over several days.
Sleeping Position
Where dermal filler has been placed in the face, patients are generally advised to sleep on their back and avoid pressure on treated areas
Back sleeping is typically recommended for up to 5 days, depending on the area treated, volume used, and individual factors
Use additional pillows if needed to minimise rolling onto the side during sleep
Clinical rationale:
Pressure on recently treated areas during the early settling phase may contribute to uneven swelling or filler displacement.
Ongoing Care (Days to Weeks)
Mild swelling, firmness, or tenderness may persist for several days and usually resolves without intervention
Avoid massaging or manipulating treated areas unless specifically instructed by your practitioner
Continue gentle skincare and apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+) daily
Avoid extreme temperatures (hot or cold) over treated areas during the early healing phase
Timing of Other Treatments Following Dermal Filler
To allow appropriate settling of dermal filler and reduce the risk of irritation or interaction, the following evidence-based timeframes are generally recommended:
Skin Treatments & Facials
Avoid facials, facial massage, peels, microdermabrasion, or treatments involving pressure or heat for at least 14 days post treatment
Waxing, Threading & Hair Removal
Avoid waxing or threading in treated facial areas for at least 14 days post treatment
Body hair removal away from treated areas may be resumed earlier if there is no bruising or tenderness
Machine-Based & Energy Treatments
Laser, IPL, radiofrequency, ultrasound, or other energy-based treatments should generally be postponed for a minimum of 2 weeks, and sometimes longer depending on the device and treatment area, please check this with your treating practitioner
Clinical rationale:
Mechanical manipulation, heat, or increased circulation may affect filler settling and increase the risk of swelling or inflammation when performed too soon after treatment.
When to Contact the Clinic
Please contact your treating practitioner as soon as possible if you experience any of the following:
Increasing pain, swelling, redness, or warmth that does not improve
Severe or worsening discomfort at or near the treated area
Changes in skin colour such as blanching (whitening), a dusky or mottled appearance, or unusual redness
Persistent pain that feels disproportionate or different from expected post-treatment tenderness
Visual changes, including blurred vision or visual disturbance
Any symptoms that concern you or feel unusual
While these symptoms are uncommon, it is important they are assessed promptly.
If you have any concerns at all, even if you are unsure or feel it may be nothing, please contact the clinic.
We would always prefer to hear from you early so we can assess and provide reassurance or advice if needed.
Seek urgent medical attention if you experience severe pain, sudden visual changes, or rapidly worsening symptoms.
Follow-Up Review
A follow-up appointment may be recommended 4-6 weeks after treatment once the product has been given time to integrate, depending on the areas treated and individual response. This allows appropriate clinical assessment and ongoing care if required.
Individualised Care
Dermal filler treatments are personalised medical procedures. The guidance above reflects general clinical recommendations but does not replace the specific aftercare instructions provided by your practitioner. Always follow the advice given to you at the time of treatment.
